Year Dedicated:  2000

Marker Size: Historic Texas Cemetery Plate

Marker Text:

Henry Swepson Whitehead (1820-1892) was a veteran of the Mexican War and served in the Confederate Cavalry. He settled with his wife, Elizabeth Ann Veal(e) (1832-1880) and their six children on a 70-acre farm near this site in 1873. Their oldest daughter, Minnie (1856-1877), while dying from tuberculosis, asked to be buried under two oak trees she could see on a neighbor’s land. This led to the purchase and establishment of this resting place on September 20, 1877. Veterans of World War I and World War II are among the generations honored here. It continues to be cared for by Whitehead Family descendants.           Historic Texas Cemetery – 2000
